Statement of Taxes - Tax Bill
Upon receipt of the tax roll and warrent, a statement of the taxes due (tax bill) is mailed to each property owner at the tax billing address shown on the tax roll. These tax statements are prepared from the information on the tax roll. The tax bill is sent to the requesting mortgage company if the parcel is tagged as an escrow account.
Who is responsible?
According to New York State law, the property owner is responsible for all property taxes and penalties which may be applicable whether or not they receive a bill. (Real Property Tax Law 922)
Why didn't I receive a bill and what can I do?
If a property owner does not receive a tax bill by January 15, notify this ofice and a bill will be sent out in a timely fashion. There are a couple of reasons for a bill not being received by the property owner. a) Mailing address is incorrect on the bill. b) the property is tagged for escrow in which case the bill has been sent to the specified mortgage company.
Receipts
If the entire bill is included with the payment, the top portion will be receipted and either mailed back or handed back to the person paying the tax bill. If the tax bill is paid by bank or mortgage company, the receipt is mailed directly to the homeowner within 3-4 weeks upon receipt of the payment.
Second Notice
If taxes have not been paid during the 30 days following the period when the taxes could have been paid without interest or penalty, then a second notice of delinquent taxes is sent to the mailing address of the owner. At this time an additional fee is imposed to cover the expense of the second notice.
What happens if I don't pay my bill?
Tax payments are received in this office until the last date so noted on the tax bill. After that date all delinquent tax bills are sent to the Oswego County Treasurer's Office for collection at 46 East Bridge Street, Oswego NY 13126. Telephone (315) 349-8393 or 1-800-349-8392 for more information on paying the tax bill and for additional fees and penalties.
